COMMENT : The Liberal Progressive “Victory”

I am somewhat puzzled as to how the Obama election has been, in some quarters, hailed as a “victory for liberals and progressives”. The fact that someone further to the right than Obama lost is, perhaps, to be noted but I see no reason to celebrate.

Some will point to the losses of the Republican “rape reps” and the election of an openly gay Senator. While these earn plaudits the overall picture is not much different.  And Bachmann with all her Islamophobia/homophobia  is still there.

For those ready to light up that spliff, I would remind you that the war on drugs is a federal concern and actively pursued by Obama.

And please, please, drivel on about “Obamacare”. Not the universal health care he touted in his first campaign, but a copy of a Romney initiative that hands the American public to the insurance industry.

Gitmo is still very much there as are the kangaroo courts of “Camp Justice”. The NDAA is still there. Torture is all but legal. Private Manning has now been in custody for more than 900 days WITHOUT TRIAL.

The drones did not even pause for the elections, hitting Yemen on that very day.

Add to this the increasing tension with respect to Iran, more the U.S.’s doing than Iran’s and the fact that the Whitehouse itself is staffed by Goldman Sachs and I wonder.

What. Are. You. Thinking?

  1. I completely agree with you. My hope is with the old GOP in shambles that a new GOP would rise up that would go more to the center of America . Forcing a Democrats to become more progressive.

I thought this was a good post to keep us all grounded and realize we still have a lot of work to do.
